Periodicals (Scholarly vs. Popular)
Periodicals such as journals and magazines are important sources for
up-to-date information in all disciplines. With a periodical collection as large
and diverse as Oklahoma States it is often difficult to distinguish between the
various levels of scholarship found in the collection. In this guide we have
divided the criteria for periodical literature into four categories:
- Newspapers (the quickest source in the information cycle-same or next
day coverage)
- Popular Magazines (the next source in the information cycle-
weekly or monthly coverage)
- News Magazines
- Opinion Magazines
- Popular Interest Magazines
- Trade Journals (Periodicals covering a specific industry or
business- weekly or monthly coverage)
- Scholarly (Periodical the offer authoritative research generally 6
months to several years into the information cycle)
